eWise - August 2017

The annual AHRI Conference is being held in Sydney 21-24  August, so if you are attending, make sure to stop by our booth (number 129), for a chat. We will have information on conducting investigations, training, and whistleblowing, in addition to our free guide 'Investigating Bullying and Harassment in the Workplace'.

National Child Protection Week is coming up, 3 to 9 September 2017. To mark Child Protection Week, a number of events are being held across Australia. Further information regarding an event near you can be found at; http://napcan.org.au/ncpw/events/2017/. These events have raised awareness and made a significant contribution to the safety and wellbeing of Australia's children and young people.
The ACT Ombudsman will be hosting an event during this week, which will focus on their Reportable Conduct Scheme. This year, WISE has conducted a high number of child protection related investigations, making this awareness week particularly important to us.

What's New

We still have vacancies for our Conducting Workplace Investigations - Advanced short course, being held in Melbourne 6-8 September 2017. This course is skills based and focuses on the relevant legislation in the industry to help conduct investigations in a sound, procedurally fair manner. Other dates & locations are available, see below for more information.

A report released Monday 14 August by Unions ACT, found that young workers are underpaid and working in unsafe conditions. According to the report, 76% of people surveyed aged 15-25, stated their bosses underpaid them, while 70% said they have been in unsafe workplaces and that they had been bullied or harassed at work. The Unions ACT has called for greater penalties for bosses ignoring workplace laws.

Update from last newsletter

The submissions have closed for the inquiry into bullying in the Police, Ambulance and Fire Service, and the hearings have been scheduled for September and October 2017. The inquiry will consider the policy response to bullying, harassment and discrimination in emergency service agencies. In coming months we will provide updates on the results of the enquiry as they are released.
