eWise - March 2018

Did you know that WISE Workplace has been providing investigation services since 2001 - nearly 18 years!

In the upcoming months WISE will be hosting a number of training events tailored specifically for investigators, by investigators. We have our first Investigating Abuse in Care course coming up in July 2018, in Sydney. This 4-day skills based course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of investigators of child abuse, in line with the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse. This is tailored in accordance with the relevant state legislation. Alternatively, as with all our training, if you have a group of 7 or more, we can tailor it to your specific workplace requirements.

Additional training dates and locations are listed below.

What's New

In late 2017, the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) for the first time, used accessorial liability laws to bring about penalties against a professional services firm which was implicated in helping one of its clients exploit vulnerable workers. The accounting firm, Ezy Accounting, was ultimately fined $53,880 after the Federal Circuit Court determined that it had been involved in various contraventions of the Act by the employer. The FWO stated that advisers must explain the rules to their clients, making it clear if they are in danger of breaching the law. Employers should be aware that the Fair Work Amendment (Protecting Vulnerable Workers) Act 2017, has now come into effect.

The #metoo campaign has focused attention back onto workplace bullying, sexual harassment, and assault. In a report, published in December 2017, by the Human Rights Commission, the results overwhelmingly indicated that on the whole, bullying, sexual harassment and assault is highly prevalent at universities and research institutions. It was also noted that a large number of individuals did not make formal reports or complaints (94% of those sexually harassed & 87% of those sexually assaulted did not complain). The report highlighted the need for a strong Code of Conduct, that is committed to, and implemented effectively.
