What's New

The QLD Supreme Court has awarded nearly $1.5 million in damages to an employee, as a result of a breach of duty of care by her employer. Judge J Henry, stated; "In a time when the potentially grave psychological harm done by workplace harassment and bullying is well known, unjustified blaming, humiliation, belittling, isolation, undermining and contemptuous disregard of an employee by a CEO was conduct collectively raising a foreseeable and not insignificant risk of psychiatric injury." The case Mary-Rose Robinson vs State of Queensland should serve as a warning to all employers, that workplace bullying can cause serious injury, and failing to act may make an organisation liable.

From 1 July 2018, the ACT Ombudsman will expanded its Reportable Conduct Scheme to include Religious Organisations. More details can be found at Ombudsman Amendment Bill 2018. Religious institutions were already subject to the ACT's Reportable Conduct Scheme when they're providing school, health and out-of-home care services. The new legislation will expand the scope to also cover activities, facilities, programs or services provided by religious organisations.
